The variant allows you to bypass the Marguareis massif by covering part of the classic Tour around the massif without descending into Valle Pesio and remaining at altitude. From Limonetto you go up along the ancient Roman road (L14), a splendid mule track that is still well preserved for long stretches, used over the centuries as a trade route between Piedmont and the French Riviera. Once you reach Colle di Tenda (1870 m), you continue firstly by passing through Colle della Perla (2086 m) and then through Colle della Boaria (2102 m). You then continue on the path that passes at high altitude in French territory along the Via del Sale, a well-known mountain bike route that can also be pleasantly covered on foot, passing Cima del Becco (2300 m) and Cima Beccorosso (2211 m) and finally continuing to Rifugio Don Barbera, located on the lake shores of Lago dei Signori (2080 m).
