Highlights and tour details

The section, variant of the GTL, joined to the previous route, allows to connect the ridge of Prunetto with that of Mombarcaro and Bossolasco, allowing hypothetical rings between the various GTL branches.

In Monesiglio, the village is arranged like a wedge between river and embankment, with the castle of the Caldera right at the edge like the tip of a spear, and preserves intact shape and charm. Interesting country churches, starting from the solitary and Romanesque private Church of San Martino, on the steep slope for Prunetto/Gottasecca, to move on to the extraordinary one of Madonna dell’Acqua Dolce (evident pagan compromise, even from the name). This is also Romanesque with three naves and includes Byzantine frescoes that are among the oldest of the entire valley (12th century).

To climb back up the valley towards Mombarcaro, you need to cross the concentric layout of Monesiglio and reach the roundabout close to the bridge over the Bormida. Follow it until the provincial road for Mombarcaro until the junction for the hamlet of Bertole, go past a rio and, in a short time, you will reach the houses of the hamlet. Climb towards the hill and, at the end of the paved road, the small road bends right towards the wood. With a moderate slope and a good gravel surface, the road climbs ideally, skirts the fence of a farm and, with a few bends, climbs the hill. At what is clearly a junction proceed left and after a flat section the gravel road returns to climb more markedly to reach the paving of the secondary road for the Ronchetti hamlet. A few metres to the right you meet the provincial road that needs to be followed to reach Mombarcaro, on the top of the ridge.

The Peak of the Langhe touches 900 metres. The name and the coat of arms the boat recalls that sea which legend has it can be seen on the clearest winter days. Mombarcaro is almost Ligurian for the vertical nature of the hill, which forces it into terraces of parallel routes, connected by cobbled paths, when not by labyrinth-like stairs, moist with freshness and marin, the wind carries the aromas of the nearby Liguria. An intact city gate (the other broken into two stumps) reminds us of the idea of closed village, narrow and protected by walls, moats, towers and castles destroyed by time and wars, while the historical museum preserves a Roman stele.
