Highlights and tour details

The 3 VALLATE (3V) hiking itinerary is so called because it starts in Valle Malone, crosses Valle Tesso, and ends after running lengthwise through the entire Val Grande di Lanzo. It is a very varied trek that descends along the pre-alpine and alpine ridges, skirting a few villages, to cover mainly mid-altitude areas where it encounters woodlands and alpine pastures, until reaching very panoramic and suggestive high mountain altitudes in some stretches, among hills and lakes in which the peaks that separate the Lanzo Valleys from Valle dell’ Orco and Valle di Locana are reflected.

Precisely because of the varied nature of the route, the stop-off places offer rather different opportunities. In fact, they are made up of small tourist and holiday farm accommodation facilities, typical of the hamlets that are encountered, ranging from private refuges, which are located at the altitudes of the alpine pastures, to the more intense and adventurous experience of the bivouac that is always open and available to hikers who have to spend a night at high altitude.

The routes take place on paths or appropriately signposted trails, partly on dirt tracks that access the mountain pastures, and on forest tracks. All these routes can be hiked without the need for equipment during the best period from May/June to October, but the length and altitude difference of some stages require you to be fairly fit. Although the stages are from east to west, and therefore with progressively increasing elevation, the choice of direction is completely free, bearing in mind that the stretches climb more in the east to west direction, while they gradually descend in the opposite direction, gradually reducing the effort and fatigue required.

The route partially coincides with the Alta Via Canavesana, allowing connections to the Valle di Locana side, in the municipality of Corio, and deviating northwards from the territory of Groscavallo towards the Gran Paradiso Park. It then joins at the western end with the GTA itineraries and the Alta Via delle Valli di Lanzo and then, for those who wish to go further towards the south-west, to the Tour della Bessanese and to France.
