Highlights and tour details

To the right of the parvis of the Basilica of Superga, a board illustrates the routes of the paths to the east of Superga; it is exactly from this point that you take the path (no. 26) downhill, which enters into the woods, and after a few hundred metres leads to the "curva del tabachin" at the Superga cooperative. Take the provincial road on the left to Baldissero (itinerary no. 50). After passing the bottleneck between the houses of "Tetti Gioanin" you leave the uphill road called Strada dei Colli (or "Panoramica") on the right and continue towards Baldissero up to a wide curve on the left (500 m) at the end of which a cart road starts on the right, which after a hairpin bend on the left meets the small path on the right that reaches the "Bric del Duca" (671 metres). You go down parallel to the Panoramica until you reach a widening with a drinking water fountain ("il toret" from which you take the path immediately on the left that goes up to the top of Bric San Giacomo (660 metres). From here you descend steeply in the opposite direction to the original one, and you shortly reach Strada Palucco, which after a short while, still descending, passes south of the "Bric Palouch", now almost entirely excavated by a gravel quarry; continuing downhill you skirt the quarry, go around what remains of the bric and finally reach the intersection with the road for Valle Ceppi and the provincial road for Baldissero. Now turn right on the provincial road for about 450 metres, then turn left on the road to Rivodora until you reach a three-way junction (about 300 metres). Leaving it, you start to go down to the right along Strada Croce, which becomes a cart road after passing some villas. This is a beautiful path in an entirely woody area; after about one kilometre turn left at a fork and cross the ridge, continuing on the northern side for a short stretch, after which you will find another path coming from the right marked by trail sign no. 51, on which you continue in the direction of Cordova until reaching the junction to Pavarolo on the right. You cross the villages of Pavarolo scattered along the ridges, from Tetti Varetto to Tetti San Defendente, then turn left onto the asphalt road to Castiglione, to leave it after about a kilometre and take the beautiful and panoramic dirt road on the right that leads to the ancient village of Bardassano, dominated by its mighty medieval castle. After crossing the village, descend on the little road that shortly reaches the crossroads of the Castiglione/Chieri provincial road, better known as Strada della Rezza; the road to Sciolze (itinerary 150) begins on the opposite side of the crossroads.  The entirely asphalt road runs right along the watershed that divides the Po plain to the north from the Chieri area to the south. After a first flat stretch, you go up with narrow bends in a chestnut wood until the crossroads of Collina Serra, from which you continue in the direction of Sciolze. Just before the apparently flat ground there is the fork to Cascina Grosso on the left. You then continue on the crest of the hill with a succession of beautiful panoramic views: on the left the plain of the Oltre Po, the Canavese, the imposing circle of the Alps with Cervino and Monte Rosa; in front of you the woods of Rivalba and Castagneto and in the distance Albugnano (the highest village of the Asti area); on the right the Chieri are, the Langhe up to the Maritime Alps and, looking behind, the Cottian Alps dominated by Monviso, the beginning of Valle Susa and, closer, Superga and the Colle della Maddalena. After passing the crossroads for Tetti Bavento and Cascina Palazzo (both on the right) you go along the Colle di Fagnour; at the beginning of the descent towards Sciolze and just before a large Enel pylon, there is a small road closed by the bar, but a pedestrian passage gives access to the hill and the steps of Parco della Rimembranza that leads to the chapel of Santa Lucia (XI century). Continuing the descent, you will find the crossroads for Tetti Sachero on the left, and shortly after on the right, the crossroads for Montaldo. You then enter Sciolze and cross it in the direction of Rivalba - Cinzano skirting the walls of the castle and, after a short descent, you go up to the "Rossetto" area from where you can admire the panorama of Sciolze with its castle. After a wide curve you reach the "le Pere" (the stones) crossroads, named because it was marked by four stones (now there are only two left because of the road flooding); they are large boundary stones with the name of the benefactor of the road and the distances to the four final localities carved into them. Continuing uphill towards Cinzano you enter the woods, with a few but majestic oaks and, after the umpteenth climb embedded between two banks of sediment and sandstone, you reach a delightful flat stretch along a basin of meadows and vineyards that open towards south-east. After a further stretch in the woods you reach a fork with a votive shrine called "Pilon dla Cadrega" from which you can see a wonderful view of Cinzano. Continuing on the crest of the very panoramic hill, you make a wide semicircle around the head of Valle del Rio Brusà, pass in front of the ancient church of San Desiderio and arrive shortly after at the junction of the Gassino - Cinzano provincial road at the "Croce del Gallo" a few hundred metres from the town of Cinzano, also dominated by its beautiful castle: A few minutes later you reach the shrine of S. Antonio where you take the road to the right to reach the town square, skirting the park of the castle on the right or left. After admiring the facade of the parish church and the ancient walls that support the castle garden, take Via Roma that leads to Moncucco. Follow the Cinzano - Moncucco provincial road until reaching the votive shrine located at the crossroads for Strada Torrazza where itinerary no. 144 (marked route) that leads to Vezzolano begins. From the crossroads you reach the village of Torrazza after a couple of hundred metres, and then go down, first on an asphalt road and then on a dirt road until the Torino -Asti provincial boundary, located downstream of Cascina Morra. From this farmstead you continue downhill on the just mentioned road, at the end of which you reach the Berzano/Castelnuovo provincial road. Cross it to take the bridge over the Rio della Montana and you face the climb of Strada Pogliano/Betlemme that reaches the hamlet of Pogliano after a series of hairpin bends. Here you turn back left and continue on a dirt road; after a flat stretch and starting to climb once again, you can admire Cinzano, the Gran Paradiso massif, the castle and the chalk quarries of Moncucco. Shortly before reaching Cascina Bethlehem, turn left along the ridge of the hill to go around the farmhouse; continue along a nice country road, on the left of which you can see a roundish boulder; continuing to climb, mist permitting, you can admire the chain of the Alps, from the Maritime to the Rosa massif and, on clear days, you can see the summit of Cervino. The route is about to come to an end: from the cross on the hill among the vineyards you can see Albugnano, and below, the beautiful abbey of Vezzolano built in the 12th century, is just a few steps away. From the Abbey you go up to the village of Albugnano.
