Highlights and tour details

For those who have not opted for the variant of the lakes and for the Bocchino delle Scaglie, go along the itinerary towards Le Vene in the opposite direction from Rifugio Mongioie. After crossing Colla di Carnino, you reach the junction for the Passo delle Saline (1500 m). Here, you continue to the left and, along the path that cuts across the road, you reach the village of Carnino Inferiore; from the little square, go  uphill to the right beyond the Rio Saline, pass the cemetery and reach Carnino Superiore (1397m). It is worth taking a short break in this ancient village, whose first houses date back to the X century. The rye thatched roof is the most characteristic part of these ancient stone houses: the gables exceed the roof forming two stone curbs, useful for creating a border for the thatch and allowing access to the roof, defining the typical structure of the enclosed roof. From Carnino you go up the Chiusetta valley to Sella di Carnino, beyond which the valley, which has become wider, takes the name of "dei Maestri". Cross Pian Sottano and Soprano della Chiusetta, picturesque alpine meadows, until you reach Colle dei Signori and Rifugio Don Barbera (2070m), which opened in 2006. From here you can reach the top of Monte Marguareis, which is about a 2 and a half hour round trip.
