From the Valcaira Refuge, descend along route A17 crossing Costa Valcaira and Rocche dei Butti. The trail follows the watershed, on sun-drenched soil, between sparse vegetation (sorbs, junipers, birches, roses and alders) and rocky outcrops, to reach an alpine glade from where you resume the slope that leads to Colle di Chionea (1223 m). From here, a lovely mule track descends between dry walls to reach the town of Chionea, at 1105 m, where it is possible to reconnect with Stage 9 of the Tanaro Trail.
