Between the River Sesia and the River Agogna, in the territory of Novara, Biandrate, Casalbeltrame, San Nazzaro Sesia, Casalvolone and Casalino, crossing the passage of paddy fields and irrigation channels of the Novara plain, birthplace of black Venus and Artemidis Rice.
Depart from Novara, from the square of the Church of Madonna del Bosco, and continue along the road for Vercelli SR11; after 1.8 km turn for Casalgiate; follow for Gionzana, where it is worth visiting the Oratory of Madonna del Latte. Return on the road for Casalgiate and after approximately 300 m turn right, where you will reach Cascina Marangana along the Roggia Biraga. The road bends to the left on SP103 and after 2 km take a right to reach Cascina Bosco; passing by Cascine Falasco you reach Casalbeltrame, coasting the Nature Reserve of the Marsh of Casalbeltrame.
From here, take the dirt road which, passing Cascina Bronzia and the Oratory of San Rocco, reaches San Nazzaro Sesia, where you can visit the magnificent Benedictine Abbey. From here, continue on the right to Villata, where on the right you can stop at the Sanctuary of Madonna della Fontana (area suitable for a packed lunch). Continue towards Villata, after 1.4 km you reach a dirt road on the left indicating Cascina Roatella, continuing on you will reach Casalvolone. From here, the sign for Pisnegno (2,3 km) after which you reach Fisrengo (0,6 km); having passed Fisrengo, after 300 m take a dirt road on the right which after 800 m coasts Cascina Sant’Apollinare and, continuing towards Cascina Stroppera you reach Ponzana. From here, keeping to the right, continuing on a dirt road which passes Cascina Risciolo and Cascina Motta, you reach Cascina Visconta, where you go back on the road already travelled in the opposite direction.
Going passed Casalgiate again you return to Novara.
DEVIATION 1:
From Casalbeltrame along SP15 shortly before Biandrate, turn left in the direction of San Nazzaro Sesia, where at approximately 1 km you reach the Sanctuary of Madonna della Preiera and then San Nazzaro Sesia.
DEVIATION 2:
From Casalbeltrame along SP15 you cross Biandrate and turn left to reach Recetto, from where you can head towards San Nazzaro Sesia
The route winds almost entirely on secondary roads and it is perfectly flat; you travel 48 km in total, or 50 km following alternative route 2, 16 km of this is on dirt road with an excellent bottom
Attractions
- Gionzana - Oratory of Madonna del Latte: The small church, once called Santa Maria della Scaglia, rises in the middle of the rice fields close to Gionzana. Inside, a rich cycle of 15th century frescoes, skilfully restored, represent the saints most dear to popular devotion, in addition to the Madonna Addolarata; the highly venerated effigy dedicated to the Madonna del Latte, was stolen in the 1970s, and has been temporarily replaced by a reproduction.
- Biandrate – Church of San Colombano: mentioned as early as 1146, it presents a Romanesque atrium, decorated with frescoes of the Last Judgement (1444) by Giovanni De Campo
- Casalbeltrame – Oasis of the Casalbeltrame Marsh: The nature reserve situated in the area of Casalbeltrame, Casalino and Biandrate is characterised primarily by rice-cultivated lands. This particular habitat is popular with migratory birds and other species that reach the nearby banks of the River Sesia to reproduce, while the nearby rice fields are a source of nourishment.
- Casalbeltrame - Museum of Agricultural Tools 'l civel: Interactive museum, which, through the narration of the Caminant (storytellers), tells the year of the peasant in the rice, fields of the Lower Novarese, marked by the passing of the seasons, where culture and memory merge. A curiosity are the 5 churches that, from the largest to the smallest, are evidence of the devotion of the village. The most important is the Parish church of Santa Maria Assunta, built in the 18th century on the remains of an older building.
- San Nazzaro Sesia - Abbey of Santi Nazario e Celso: Founded in 1040 by Riprando dei Conti di Biandrate and Bishop of Novara, it is an imposing fortified complex. Inside, there is the 15th century three nave church in Gothic-Lombard style built entirely of terracotta, with exquisite frescoes that date from the same period. Interesting cycle of paintings with the stories of St. Benedict in the cloister.
- San Nazzaro Sesia - Shrine of Madonna della Fontana: built around 1590 to be demolished and re-built in the second half of the 18th century; of the older building remains the miraculous image of the Madonna, under which flows the ancient fountain.
- San Nazzaro Sesia – Museum of Stumps: roots modelled by Piero Baudo
- Regional Nature Park “Lame” del Sesia: the Park environment is typically fluvial with lame (blades in English, are formations of swamps coming from coves abandoned by the river and that have modified the river’s flow), bodies of water, pebbles and sands; a natural oasis inserted into an environment characterised by rice monoculture. Ideal habitat for aquatic fauna and rare autochthonous vegetation.
- Casalvolone – Church of St. Peter: built as a pieve in the 12th century, it is situated in the cemetery on the outskirts of the village. It has three naves with apses; the spans are covered by ribbed cross vaults. The 15th century frescoes that decorate the walls and apse area are exquisite. Interesting same-age five-storey bell tower enriched by hanging arches.
- Ponzana-Casalino - Oratory of San Martino:The ancient Oratory of San Martino came to light during the restoration work in Casa Shalom. It is enriched by important 15th and 16th century frescoes.
- Ponzano-Casalino – Butterfly Garden: the former cemetery, no longer in use for 50 years and recently recovered, is now home to an interesting and unique Butterfly Garden. The presence of tree essences that attract different species of butterflies make it an ideal place for butterfly watching.
