Variant of Stage 1 of the Bar to Bar which, with a short detour from the original route, allows to reach the historic centre of Neive.
From Cascina Principle (Neive), take the paved road and turn left as far as the crossroads with the provincial road. Turn left and along a few bends, you reach the roundabout that takes to the concentric of Neive Alto, one of the “Most beautiful villages in Italy”. In dialect it is called “pais dij snjorot” (village of lords), as confirmed by a score of noble houses that gentrify the circular track of medieval streets with fine portals and interiors. At the top, the bell tower takes us back to the glories of the municipal statutes, while the beautiful 17th century castle of the Counts of Castelborgo highlights an antique richness. At the bottom, beyond the junction for Mango, the considerable Romanesque bell tower of Santa Maria del Piano reminds us of the importance of the monastic re-colonisation of these hills, devastated and then abandoned by the barbarians. Neive is also the town of Romano Levi, the poet of the grappa who has bewitched at least two generations with his direct-fire grappa and his free-heart labels: for years now, Romano has been climbing the hills among the wild women of his naive fantasies, but everything here talks about him and his childish wonder for the purity of nature.
