Highlights and tour details

Another short section along the ridge to arrive at Albaretto, continuing on the watershed ridge between the Langa del Vino (Wine Langa) and the Upper Langa.

Having visited the must-see village of Serravalle Langhe, on the main crest route, set off in the direction of Albaretto della Torre.

From the centre of the village, skirted the town hall, cross the entire square to take the small street of the left. At the end, descend again left for a few metres, then turn right on via Corriore and, on a paved road, return to the provincial road, going around the old fortified mound. Turn left again and on the provincial road go along the whole straight, until the junction to the right for San Bovo. After a few metres, climb to the left on a quiet dirt track that continues above the provincial road until, in Langa, it crosses it to take the dirt track that bends right, skirting an extended hazelnut grove at the edge of a pine forest. Having reached a saddle descend into the wood and, keeping left at the only junction, reach a paved road again. Cross it to descend to the right on a gravel road for a few dozen metres. At a fork in the road, descend to the right on a dirt track and, having passed a lovely section in the wood and a small rio, exit again among the croplands. It is then necessary to descend first left, then immediately right and go passed the gate of a farm (remember to close the gate after having passed it, as it keeps the roe deer away from the hazelnut buds).Follow the fencing first to the right and then downhill; finally, bend to the right, on flat ground, crossing the hazelnut grove and reaching the exit gate that delimits the property. Continue on a few more metres on a dirt track and, having passed a new stream, turn left and climb to reach first an abandoned farmhouse, then the paved road that goes along the ridge. Follow it for a few metres to the left and, passed the farm “Propi bun” take the flat paved road to the right among the hazelnut trees until you go passed a new rivulet and climb gently to the first houses of Albaretto della Torre. Albaretto is marked by the tall 13th century medieval tower, built by Del Carretto as a fort, watchtower and essential communication tool. 28 metres high and 5 m wide, it is perfectly accessible and is worth going up (the keys are with the Circolo La Torre), even just for the view. The village is located in a phenomenal position overlooking the Talloria Valley (Sinio is immediately below) and, practically, overlooks Barolo from up high (a little like Roddino). The beautiful parish church, the two chapels at the entrance to the village, San Bernardo and Sant’Agostino, are worth a visit.

The village is well-known worldwide above all for one of its extraordinary, anarchic and self-taught chefs who has incorporated the name of the village in his name, almost like a medieval painter or a troubadour from Provence: Cesare di Albaretto. Cesare has been appointed Artistic Director of Upper Langa, a title he fully deserves!

From Albaretto della Torre you can continue towards Benevello or follow the alternative itinerary towards Lequio Berria.
