Highlights and tour details

From the small port of Cannero a beautiful paved road climbs up to intersect the main road: the panoramic view of the village of Cannobio is remarkable. Cross the state road and continue on a beautiful mule-track that climbs steeply through a lovely wood and then continue onthe hillside to Carmine Superiore, with its Church of San Gottardo. From this medieval village you can also enjoy a wonderful view of the Castles of Cannero. After the crossroads to Viggiona you reach Molineggi, a small village whose name and numerous findings tell the story of the activity of ancient mills. From here the descent begins towards Cannobio, passing through Solivo. The mule track comes out on the carriage road of Valle Cannobina, you follow it for a few dozen metres towards Cannobio and take the cycle/pedestrian path that reaches the Park in the locality of Amore. From here you go down to cross the state road and take the paved road to reach the beautiful lakeside promenade that you follow as far as the lido area and the sports ground. Following the cycle path that goes around the sports ground you reach a subway that allows you to cross the state road. Immediately afterwards you go up the ramp that reaches the bridge of the state road that you follow on the pavement continuing for about 500 m to the locality of Darbedo. Here a beautiful winding mule track begins, which climbs up to Campeglio. From here the beautiful mule track continues on the hillside through the oak and chestnut woods to reach the characteristic village of Cinzago with an unusual triangular bell tower. Still on the beautiful mule-track we continue to the Church of San Bartolomeo in Montibus, a small pearl in the woods, built in the 13th century and dedicated to St. Bartholomew the Apostle. From the church we continue on the hillside, descending to Formine and finally reaching San Bartolomeo, the last hamlet of the municipality of Cannobio before the State Border.

Attractions

Cannobio is the last town on the Piedmontese shores of Lake Maggiore before the Swiss border. Because of its geographical position, it was an important strategic and commercial junction that is still well represented today by the presence of numerous XVII-XIX century buildings that overlook the cobbled streets of the old town centre, such as the sixteenth-century residences of Palazzo Omacini and Palazzo Pironi. The Borgo has been awarded the Orange Flag of the Italian Touring Club and has been recognised by FIAB as a "bike-friendly municipality". Every hamlet of Cannobio has small oratories: the one in Cinzago is characteristic for its particular triangular section. The church of San Bartolomeo in Montibus is a small and peaceful place in the woods.
